SKYE

My heart is pounding so hard I’m pretty sure it is going to burst out of my chest.

I walk away from him with all the dignity I can muster.

I hate him.

He broke my heart.

He betrayed me.

He left me with nothing when I needed him most.

I should run away from him and not look back.

Yet why do I feel like I want to turn and run back into his arms? Why does my body ache to feel those big, muscled arms wrapped round me? Why, when I looked up into those blue eyes, did I long for him to bend forward and kiss me? Why is my skin still tingling from the electricity of his touch?

Why is he still in my heart after all this time?

I shake my head. It cannot be. I can’t do this. I won’t do this. Cian “Lucky Seven” Hughes is a piece of work, a cheat, a player. I won’t let him into my head.

He is nothing to me now.

I turn into the press room. My stomach drops as a quick scan of the room reveals Murray standing with a petite blonde woman with a killer bob and cheekbones that could cut glass. I take a breath and force myself to relax.

Even Murray is unlikely to be hitting on the Club Chairwoman.

He could try, but I doubt he’d get very far. A wry smile crosses my face. That’s one chat-up attempt I’d like to watch.

She’d eat him for breakfast.

I advance on the party, pinning my most vivacious smile to my lips.

“Skye!” Murray grins. “This is Grace Crawford, the Club Chair. And this is Lennox, my new coach.”

“Pleased to meet you both,” I say, offering my hand.

Grace’s smile is warm as she shakes my hand, but Lennox’s welcome is unexpectedly terse. After the briefest of introductions, he excuses himself.

“Please excuse Lennox,” says Grace, watching as he leaves the room, a small frown furrowing her brow. “He’s deep in the throes of pre-season. Lot on his mind.”

“Of course,” says Murray, giving Grace his most dazzling smile. “I’ll catch up with him at training tomorrow.”

“Indeed. How are you settling in? How are you finding Oakheart Glen?” There is a quiet pride in her voice as she speaks about her hometown.

“I was here years—” Murray begins.

“I’m from Oakheart,” I interject.

I squeeze Murray’s hand discreetly. No need to bring up the past. Those were different times. Different Chair. Different coach. Better not to revisit them.

“A fellow Oakheart girl! Welcome home! You guys were in Paris for such a long time, weren’t you? What was it? Fifteen years?” She beams, the smile lighting her otherwise rather austere expression.

“Yes. Thanks.”

“Where are you staying?”

“We got a place up on Ben Breg…the new houses.”

“Ah, I’d heard the Murroughs had sold that land to a developer.” Her smooth brow wrinkles slightly. “Beautiful place. Great views.”

“Indeed,” answers Murray. “We love it, don’t we, darling? And we’ve enrolled our daughter at Ravenswood Academy.”

“My alma mater,” says Grace with a smile. “Great school. She’ll enjoy it there. Is she coping okay with the move?”

“Yes, she’s doing fine.
